Catching Up

The past two sessions saw the party explore more of the Sunless Citadel. They acquired a kobold ally named Meepo, who led the group to the kobold Queen. She promised a reward if the party would return a white dragon wyrmling that was stolen from them by the goblins that inhabit this place.

Continuing into the goblin side of the ruin, the party found a fountain that dispensed elixir of fire-breathing, and another that dispensed poison. They avoided a chillingly cold door, and took out some goblin advanced stockades, before laying siege to Goblintown and slaying the hobgoblin chief and his shaman. Along the way, they also rescued a gnome named Irky, and a human monk and aasimir barbarian, who have joined the party.

Into the Kobold's Den

Venturing inside the Sunless Citadel, the party (now known as SPecial Executive for Counter-Tecromancy, Terror disposal, Evil elimination and Restitution of stolen goods or SPECTER for short.) immediately ran into a fancy locked door guarded by a Giant Rat. Pipagon claimed the rat's body as a trophy as the group moved on down a hall. They discovered a room with a mysterious iron keg, and a weeping kobold who explained that the goblins had stolen a dragon wyrmling named Calcryx. The kobold, Meepo, led the party to the kobold queen who spoke of the previous adventurers and a druid Outcast that leads the goblins. After offering a reward for recovering the stolen wyrmling, the queen granted safe passage and Meepo's aid, and SPECTER headed deep into the fortress. They came upon a fountain that belched fire breath potion and bottled some, then tripped an alarm bell at the goblin's back door. Retreating from that fight, the party encamps in the fountain room for a long rest.

In Need of a Magical Cure

Leaving Quantivas, the party took a brief 3-day journey to the small town of Oakhurst. There they talked to the local priest and townsfolk to learn a few interesting items:

> The "miracle cure" is real – it is a fruit sold by goblins that appear in town on the solstices.

> The "spa" was a business venture undertaken by some children of the General Store's owner. They had some kind of agreement with the goblins to bring more of the fruit, but the goblins didn't show up.

> Two weeks ago, the two children along with a hired paladin and ranger left to go visit the goblin stronghold, which is in old ruins called the "Sunless Citadel".

> Over the years a few adventurers have visited these ruins but they have disappeared. The General Store owner fears that her children will have the same fate and offered a reward for finding them.

The party headed out to the location of the Sunless Citadel. They found the ruins sunk into a ravine. After fending off some Giant Rats and navigating a pit trap, they entered the first tower room of the citadel to find evidence that the adventurers had made it that far (in the form of some goblin corpses.)

The Cult & the Stoes

As the building burns, most of the party rush inside and rescue a man trapped under a fallen beam. It is Sebastian Stoe and after questioning the witnesses and putting out the fire, the party takes Sebastian to his father's house, where they receive their payment.

However, Sir Pentis notes that Sebastian is very sick and not just with the effects of the fire. Benavides spotted a strange ritual rune in the shack before it collapsed. Putting two and two together with information from Ilva, the three magic users determine the rune is necromantic in nature and is in some way connected to Shar, the Mistress of the Night. Sebastian was being used as part of a ritual to Shar.

The party reunites Ilva and Mixi. Mixi entertains Ilva and Densharr at her apartment for the evening. Densharr awakes to find Ilva gone – apparently abducted in the night. After reporting her abduction to Sal at the Constabulary, the party splits. Sir Pentis goes to the Temple of Tymora, while everyone else goes to the College of the Arcane to research the rune at the arcane library.

At the library, Densharr and Benavides learn the rune was designed to suck a living soul into the Shadowweave and allow denizens of the Shadowweave to inhabit the mortal body. Since the ritual was interrupted, Sebastian's soul is slowly leaking into the Shadowweave and he will die in 6-10 weeks if this isn't stopped. Grizzly leaves them at the library to inform Lord Stoe of the danger. As he arrives at the Stoe estate, he spots Ilva in a nearby alley. She has been beaten but is still alive.

Grizzly takes her to the nearest temple, which is where Sir Pentis has been learning about Shar from a high priest. He learns that cultists of Shar appeared long ago, before Farlorn was destroyed but they were defeated quickly. The priest warns Sir Pentis that Shar has always had one goal – to replace the material plane with the Shadowweave – but that it would take support from a huge force like a government or many rich nobles to make such a thing come about. Grizzly arrives and the priest heals Ilva and promises to keep her safe. She relates that goons belonging to Lord Stoe abducted her and accused her of sickening Sebastian. When she couldn't answer their questions, they beat her and threw her out.

Meanwhile, Densharr and Benavides show up to the Stoe Estate only to be met by Sal and some cloaks. Rendez-vousing with Grizzly and Sir Pentis at the Constabulary, Sal recommends that the party get out of town. Lord Stoe is blaming them for what happened with the cult and it looks like it's a frame job. Sal believes the party is blameless but suggests they check out a shady new spa that has opened some distance from town. This will keep them out of Lord Stoe's reach and maybe turn up information that can cure young Sebastian.

The party makes plans to depart in the morning. Sir Pentis picks up a custom suit he ordered, Grizzly warns his family, Benavides acquires spell components and Densharr buys a nice necklace for Mixi. He gives it to her and explains they'll be out of town for awhile.

A lovesick side job...

Returning to the Constabulary the next morning, Sal informs the party that the Kron brothers were bailed out overnight by the deJuns. He has a new job for them, an easy one – supervising a garden party at the Saj estate, where there will be lots of free food.

At the party Sal introduces you to Count Blazen Stoe, one of the Coin noble house leaders. Count Stoe is having a problem with his son Sebastian. Sebastian has taken an absurd interest in a tavern wench and keeps running off to be with her. The count has had enough of it and wants the party to recover him, and maybe rough him up a bit to remind him of his responsibilities and how dangerous the south side of town can be.

The party tracked Sebastian to a dive bar called The Black Blade. After buying a round for the tavern, they learn from the proprieter – "Ma" – that Ilva is the name of the girl and she hasn't been around in a week. Ilva's friend Mixi, a half-elf who works at the bar, initially resists sharing information but then admits that she and Ilva used to attend meetings in Outsider's Ghetto that were positively cult-like. Mixi suspects that's where Ilva and Sebastian have gone.

The party locates the meeting shack and takes down the shack's guards only to have the building go up in flames!

Revenge in Quantivas

Sal, a good-natured recruiter for Quantivas's City Watch (the Cloaks), has invited our characters to come work for him during the time for the Autumn Harvest festival. Taking the PCs to the Saj Estate, where the tournament activities will take place, the party learns there was a dust up between two of Mistress Saj's employees – a halfling seamstress named Binnacy Kron, and a stableboy/squire named Larch deJus. This otherwise innocuous event turns dark when the victim's brother, Nelvon deJus, turns up looking for him. The lad was to be escorted home by Cloaks but failed to arrive.

Interrogating Binnacy, she initally resists sharing any information, but eventually cracks and admits that the Cloaks taking Larch home are her brothers. Instead of returning him to his family, they have taken him to the top of a watch tower in the city wall as part of a revenge plot to avenge the death of their sister Maude.

The party hurried to the tower, where a strange priest was mid-sacrifice, but were able to handily defeat him and arrest the brothers. Sal commended the party for their work, and invited them to continue their investigation later.

- Maude had a relationship with Maurice deJus – elder brother of Larch and younger brother of Nelvon. Binnacy says Maude's pregnancy was an embarrasment to the deJus family. They rejected her offer to give the child to them to be raised and instead paid for her to travel to a city on the other side of Valtherion. She died when her traveling group was attacked by bandits.

- Binnacy's father died shortly afterwards, supposedly of grief. Before he died, he had been approached by a strange priest claiming to worship Talos, and offering to revenge Maude's death.

- The brothers admit to having contacted the priest against their father's wishes. But the priest was the one who suggested the blood ritual. They met the priest in Alais, when they were arranging Maude's burial, at a tavern.
